GOVERNOR APPOINTS ANTI-GANG DIRECTOR AND ADVISORS, RELEASES $2.8 MILLION TO FIGHT GANG VIOLENCE
Governor Schwarzenegger enacts critical measures in the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention Program (CalGRIP), an initiative that will help fight gang violence across the state. CalGRIP targets more than $31 million in state and federal funding toward local anti-gang efforts, including job training, education and intervention programs, and will give law enforcement the tools to closely track gang leaders. The Governor introduced CalGRIP in May 2007 to tackle the recent dramatic upswing in gangs across the state and their proliferation in suburban and rural areas. There are more than 420,000 gang members statewide.
